Laura Davis asked:

These instructions once perfected will give you perfect roses commonly used on wedding cakes; this method is tricky and it is recommended you practise making the roses before the day of preparation.

Break off a small piece of the fondant and roll it until you roughly have a 1” diameter ball. Shape the ball into a cone by pinching one side of it; ideally you want the cone to be 1.5” tall.

To make a petal roll a ball of fondant roughly a quarter of the size of the previous, do not worry too much about size, if in a later stage you are finding that the sizes of the petals are too small then start again.

Once you have your ball we want to flatten it to form a petal; use your thumb and press down on the ball. You want to create a circle that is 2” in diameter, it is important that the petal is about ¼” thick on the bottom and thin on the top.

*For a more realistic look ensure that the petal tips are paper thin.

Having created the first petal, apply to the base of the cone, carefully wrapping it around finishing with a furl at the top to create a bud.

It is best to start by applying the thick side of the petal to the base of the cone then carefully wrap the thin ‘petal’ around- slightly bending it over itself to create a bloom effect.

Do the same with the three remaining petals; applying them from the bottom bud and delicately shaping the thin top to replicate a rose’s petal as it unfurls from the bud.

Make five more petals, this time slightly larger than the originals but ensure you still keep the tips as thin as possible. Apply these final petals lower down on the base than the previous petals, spread the petals evenly round the base layering them up and curling the edges back a slight bit more to create more bloom.

Continue layering the petals on until you are satisfied with the fullness of the rose.

Mike Singh asked:

Floribunda roses are some of the most amazing out there because of the large, dense amounts of buds that are produced. These roses will have simultaneously occurring blooms in each truss. They are less perfect looking roses but are so dense in their production that they can truly make a statement in virtually any landscape especially when planted together.

Here are some facts to know about the Floribunda roses.

What’s The Difference? Few of these roses are scented and their shape is not always of the perfect rose. But, they make up for this quality when you take into consideration the all summer long blooming of rich colors and beautifully dense foliage that they provide.

Easy To Grow? Although the Floribunda rose is a rose, which tend to be difficult plants to grow, they are less of a problem to many. They are more tolerant to conditions and the environment and also continue to produce blooms over and over again. They are easier to grow only because they can take more punishment, so to speak.

Where Can I Plant Them? Floribunda roses can be planted in any open but not vulnerable location. They enjoy the sun and varieties are available for different amounts of sunlight as well. They can and should be planted as bare roots from the months of November to March in most climates. This is much less expensive as well.

Trim Those Roots! Before you plant them, make sure to prune back the roots to allow for new root growth to take place. This can make a large difference in the quality of these roses.

Feed Them? When they begin to grow in the spring, you’ll want to feed them with a rose fertilizer that can be commonly found. Do this monthly until the end of summer months.

Which Ones Do I Go With? There are several varieties of the Floribunda rose. You can choose those that you enjoy and that will prosper in your environment. Some good choices include Rob Roy which is very deep red in color, Glenfiddisch which is a golden amber color with large flowers, and the Ballindallock Castle which is a salmon/coral color of blooms.

Abhishek Agarwal asked:

The major concern expressed by many rose gardeners is related to preventing disease. Gardening roses takes a lot of commitment, hard work and patience. One will need to bring all his gardening skills into play to ensure healthy rose bushes. Prevention and treatment of the diseases is an integral part of cultivating the perfect rose garden brimming with mesmerizing roses.

If you are a skillful and innovative gardener, cultivating healthy roses will not be a very difficult task for you. Gardening roses requires a good eye for details and knowledge enough to see you through the problems as they happen. Such knowledge will also come to your aid in the prevention of diseases. Following are some handy tips for prevention of rose related diseases.

1. Have proper spacing – You must ensure good air ventilation for all your rose plants. To make this possible, you should keep enough spacing between the plants to allow air to circulate properly. Rose plants with poor air ventilation can easily catch diseases.

2. Watering in the morning – It is important that you water your rose plants in the morning. This will enable the water to evaporate during the day. On the contrary, watering the rose plants in the evening can cause powdery mildew resulting in growth of fungus and diseases.

3. Keep Regular check – You must examine your rose garden on a regular basis so that you can catch any disease as it happens in the first stage itself. Treating any type of rose disease is easy if caught in the initial stages.

4. Cut off the infected branches – You must make sure that you cut off all the infected branches or leaves as soon as you spot the disease. This will help significantly in checking the spread of the disease.

5. Treat the infected rose plants – There are various kinds of off-the-shelf products available in the market to treat the rose diseases. They can be very effective in the treatment of diseases such as powdery mildew, rose mosaic or the black spots. You can also check for some home remedies available. If you are an environment friendly gardener, you can look out for a lot of good organic medicines available for the treatment of rose gardening diseases.

How to determine that your roses are suffering from a disease?

A lot of rose gardeners have questions regarding spotting the rose diseases on time. Following are some of the common rose diseases along with their symptoms. Once you know the type of infection, you can treat it more effectively.

Black Spot – Black spots are more prominent and common in cooler environs and wet weather conditions. If you can see circular black spots on your roses with fringed margins, it is the black spot disease in all probability.

Rust – Contrary to black spots, rust develops in high temperatures of around 65-75 degrees. It normally appears as rust on the underside of the rose plant leaves. With time and lack of care, it also starts showing up on the upper side of the leaves.

Powdery Mildew – It is a type of fungus that can grow in both dry or wet weather. It characterized by the appearance of talcum powder like substance on the rose plant leaves.

Rose Mosaic – This disease is a result of a virus infection. On its occurrence, you will observe splotches of green or yellow in a mosaic form on the leaves of the rose plant.

Eric Chen asked:

One of the most revered and popular flowers ever is the rose. Roses are incredibly versatile flowers that come in myriad colors, sizes and varieties. They make wonderful gifts for any occasion from celebrating the birth of a baby, honoring Mom on Mother’s Day or memorializing someone who has passed away. There are hundreds of different types of roses and many have special meaning based on tradition or lore. If you are like many people, you love the way roses look, smell and hold up in a variety of conditions. With just a bit more research, you can choose a gift that is not only sweet, but also very meaningful to the person who receives them.

Color usually dictates the meaning behind different roses. Some of these include:

- Red – Love, Romantic Love, Passion

- Deep Burgundy – Beauty

- White – Purity and Innocence. For brides, white roses mean “Happy Love”

- Pink – “Thank you”, Gentleness, Grace

- Light Pink – Sympathy, Joy, Sweetness

- Yellow – Friendship, Promise, Remember Me, Jealousy

- Orange – Desire, Enthusiasm

- Red and White (together) – Unity

- Red and Yellow (together) – Happy Feelings

- Peach – Sincerity, Gratitude

- Coral – Feelings of Desire

- Lavender – Enchantment

- Blue – Unattainable

As for different rose varieties, your florist can help you find the perfect rose for every occasion but a classic choice is always the long-stemmed rose. They make a dramatic statement and can be arranged in a tall vase or trimmed down for shorter, more understated look. Loose stems can be put into a vase for an instantly beautiful, striking addition to any room or office and are virtually foolproof when it comes to arrangement of these flowers. When placed with sleek greenery or elegant calla lilies, the affect becomes even more intense and stunning than a single-flower arrangement. A hand-tied rose flower bouquet can also be carried over one arm for special events such as graduations, proms, debutante balls and weddings. And rose sprays are mainstays at funerals and memorial services.

Tell someone you love them, want them, need them, think they are beautiful or feel gratitude for them with the gift of roses and you have made a fantastic choice. The universal appeal and femininity of roses is in sharp contrast with the flower’s thorny stems and hearty nature. Perhaps this is part of the appeal for rose lovers. Just like people, roses are not what they seem at first glance and offer admirers more than meets the eye.

Roses are perfect for any occasion because they are classic and they smell just as terrific as they look. Whether you opt for real or silk roses, the lucky recipient is sure to be happy. Below are some common uses for roses:

$ Valentine’s Day. Because the classic red rose is a symbol of passion, it is undeniably the most popular floral arrangement to be given on a holiday that is all about love. On Valentine’s Day, florists find themselves delivering countless orders of roses to all who are lucky enough to have found love.

$ Wedding bouquet. Speaking of love, there is no better day to celebrate it than on a wedding day. Many brides prefer to carry a bouquet draped with roses because of their classic beauty and elegance.

$ Prom corsage and boutonniere. Every high school student looks forward to their prom and, as such, they are responsible for selecting a flower for their date. The gentleman will select a corsage, either wrist or pinned, that will feature a rose and ribbons to coordinate with their date’s dress. The young ladies will select a rose boutonniere for their date, which will commonly feature a simple rose bloom with an accent of babies breath.

$ Mother’s Day. Every woman loves roses and this is especially true of moms on Mother’s Day, which is the perfect day to remind her how much she means to you with a beautiful bouquet of roses or a vase filled with a beautiful arrangement and accented with a red bow.

$ Anniversary. Whether it’s your anniversary, your friends or family, roses are the perfect gift to celebrate this happy occasion.

$ Congratulatory messages for a new birth, graduation, new business or other milestone. Nothing says congratulations quite as well as roses do.

$ Show of appreciation. If someone has been especially kind, helped you through a difficult situation or simply offered you encouragement when you needed it the most, roses are the perfect way to say ‘thank you’ and offer a thoughtful way of showing your appreciation.

Just as there are many different occasions for which roses are appropriate, there are a number of variations in their color. The most classic rose color is red, but these slender beauties are also grown in white, pink, peach, yellow, etc. An arrangement of roses is usually prepared with babies breath, which is a white decorative addition that adds the perfect contrast and brings out the brightness of the rose. If you are looking for a classic way to show you care, roses are just the ticket.
