People occasionally miss the most important point of a garden. They are there to be enjoyed and nothing helps this more than a place to take a moment.

A well planned garden will not really only include walkways but also lots of seating. The idea of this is to provide a good and comfy place to stop, sit, and smell the roses. In the classical gardens of the past, deep stone benches were common fixtures in most gardens. Often the stone slab benches complimented the ornamental statues and decorative plaques giving the garden the look of a Greek temple. This style was much more a concession to form than an attempt to provide comfort. Modern garden benches have kept this classical flavor while addressing comfort.

Modern garden benches have gotten away from heavy stone slabs for the most part. They were in no way actually designed for comfort and did not really encourage the sitter to remain long and relax. The idea behind most modern benches is to do only that; encourage a lingering stay in the garden. Although the slab style remains, much more and much more benches are being made with curving backrests that allow much more comfort and ease of sitting.

Wood seems to have been replacing stone in numerous garden benches. The drawback of wooden in the past was the fact that it weathered in the outdoors. Stone was favored for its durability. New methods of weatherproofing wood have made this a moot point. The lighter and much less expensive wood garden benches have been able to rival stone for longevity.

Still, an important consideration in garden design is the overall concept of the garden. Formal gardens that make use of classical decorative wall plaques and statues as accessories still would find slab stone benches much more harmonic. Woodland kind gardens would favor wood benches. If the concept of the garden is rustic, the less formal benches would much better match this.

Modern garden benches have made use of modern materials and protective methods to create a broad selection of options for garden design. Regardless of the concept of your garden, remember that the important part is that benches are an important element. A garden, modern or classical, is meant to be enjoyed. A comfy bench conjures up and image of a sunny day, a fine book, and a time to relax and reflect. You should take your inspiration from the Japanese Zen rock and sand gardens that made the location of a single seating feature one of the most important elements in the design. The designers of these gardens understood that a garden’s worth is measured in how far it can be enjoyed and viewed in comfort.

Contemporary metal wall art has elegance and class. In a large room where people gather together, a large hanging piece will create a gravity that pulls attention towards it. It will become the focus of the room.

Fireplaces and fountains are objects that will naturally create a focal point. Use the opportunity of a fireplace or fountain to place a special piece above it. In the case of a fountain, the sculpture can actually be an organic component of the fountain. The fundamental principle is that you work with what the room can offer.

Use metal hanging art outside in the garden. A flower garden gains refinement with art work used with garden fences, walls, trellises, and pond and fountains. Morning glories, pole beans, honeysuckle and clematis are climbing plants that are particularly suitable for three dimensional art objects. Make an outside garden living room with benches, rain chains, wind chimes and sun dials.

Another example of a piece of a dual purpose is the clock. A clock is the perfect instrument for a hanging art piece. Mirrors too can be made a part of a piece. Wall light fixtures may be incorporated. Do not forgot colored glass. The schemes that you combine form and function are endless.

Pieces can often have multiple uses. A piece may also include a clock. Candle scones is perfect for a wall piece. Mirrors and colored glass incorporate well with contemporary hanging art. Color, light, functional use coming together in a lovely piece of art will tie a room together beautifully.

Seek the right balance of form and function. Utilize book cases, media centers, and curios displays. Have the room be amusing. One could be entertained by simply sitting and looking around. Use humor and child like curiosity and fantasy to be an innocent charm to a room.

Always be on the look out for ideas. Study interior design books and magazines. Steal ideas and change them just enough to make them your own. Ask questions and do not be afraid to go a little over the top. Perhaps, you might want to use the services of a professional designer. A professional can work with your ideas to realize the look and feel that you want.

As much as possible use local artists from your region. Generate authenticity by using regional artists who invoke a regional theme whether it is the American South, New England or Chicago Midwest. Support those artists who have a way of touching you personally. Contemporary metal wall art can be well within your budget too. Magnificent smaller sets can be purchased for under one hundred dollars. Larger wall sculptures may run from one hundred to around a thousand dollars. What a satisfying endeavor supporting local artists is by collecting their works and using them in your home or business decor.

You can select attractive metal wall art to change the appearance of your living or family room. Contemporary metal wall art has unique decorative qualities that fit in with any color scheme or room size.

While having a great looking garden is important you will need to think about ways of allowing the beauty of your garden to shine through in various types of weather situations. Some people also like to have the option of having their garden illuminated at night. For these many people, looking at various landscape lighting options will allow you the opportunity of having your garden looking just the way you want it, no matter what the natural lighting conditions are.

In order to provide the right landscape lighting conditions you will need to choose from a variety of lighting fixtures. These fixtures can be in the form of lamps, lanterns, spotlights, halogen lights and even solar lights. The price of these lighting fixtures varies for each style of lighting.

If you are planning on using landscape lighting you will need to decide where to place the lighting in order to achieve the best lighting effects. You may also want to think about which lights will provide your garden with an all over lighting. You can look in gardening magazines to get an idea of the many different ways that these landscape lighting fittings can be used.

While it may possible to find ideas for installing landscape lighting in your garden from landscape and gardening magazines, there is another way as well. For this other method, you should look at your garden in the daytime and in the night time. In the morning you will need to look what spots in your garden could be enhanced by the use of landscape lighting. Then, when night falls, you look out at your garden again and see what areas would benefit from the use of lighting.

Then, the morning after this nocturnal exercise, you should go out into the garden and mark out roughly where you think there is a need for lighting. Once you have looked at this area properly, try imagining what sort of lights would be of use. You can then go to the garden store to look for these lights, after you have decided on the type of landscape lighting.

After you have found your perfect lights and you have studied the instructions on setting them up you will have to commence fixing the landscape lighting in a way that will make the most out of your garden. You ought to try subtle and strong lighting in order to decide on the best for your garden; a dimmer can help with these tests.

After you have finished your trials and have installed your final lighting, you will see what a difference having the right landscape lighting can make to your garden. From now on, when night falls, you will be able to appreciate the beauty of your garden in a different light.

Normal gardens we know are areas ornamented with several plants and where people become gardeners for their own benefit. Aside from a few niceties to make gardens more accommodating to homeowners and guests, a lot of people go the extra mile in enhancing a garden to give it more class and pizazz. One such ornamental sample that offers gardens their sophistication is a garden fountain.

Fountains are the kinds of adornments where water continually gushes through and over thanks to electric pumps. The aesthetic amount that accompanies fountains can furthermore bring attraction wherein people and birds can relax next to it.

Everyone understands that fountains operate because of electric-powered pumps. However, lots of people don’t know that self spouting fountains previously existed prior to the discovery and use of electricity. So how did people back then able to build it?

History

Different civilizations were already using fountains mainly for drinking and bathing. Regular wells and fountains were among the sources of drinking water next to natural bodies of fresh water. The ancient Romans were probably the most well-known when it comes to engineering water delivery. If a Roman town or city is far from a water source, aqueducts were built that function as the pipe network where fresh water from the farthest mountain can go downward and get gathered. Water that passes through these aqueducts are then collected in reservoirs that could be circulated again via another network of aqueducts that connects to the city’s wells, pools, baths and fountains.

The Trevi fountain in Italy and the one in Peterhof in Russia is an example of free flowing fountain. These fountains were able to spout tall jets of water and constantly made cascading flows without the use of pumps.

Scientific Principle

Gravity and pressure are the main factors that provide fountain its constant flow. The influence of gravity and pressure on fountains is that the flow and spouting height on fountains are determined by how high and how fast the source of the water is.

In the old days, engineers and builders of early fountains relied on elevation and gravity for the dispersal of fresh water not just to fountains, but also on wells, pools and baths. Today, electricity and modern mechanics play a vital role in fluid mechanics and water physics. Garden fountains are usually supplied with water by a water pump and the pressure and flow of the water onto the fountain’s basin is controlled by a system of pipes and valves.

The pressure that controls the upward flow of the water is influenced by the dimension and diameter of the pipes and primarily by valves. It’s the equivalent as rotating the valve counter clockwise on a shower. Just like any other valve, fountain valves regulate the flow and quantity of water coming out of it. The smaller the pipe’s diameter, the greater the pressure of the liquid coming out of it resulting to the liquid’s high velocity burst. You can try this by covering the nozzle of a faucet partially with your finger.

Even though fountains have a clear-cut concept of function, they still need clever architecture and well-planned construction to have e graceful waterflow. The design of a fountain should also really be beautiful since most better garden fountains are used largely for the attraction of guests and revelers.

The garden is perhaps the nearest foundation of nature we can find to in our inner-city dwellings. Our gardens also grant us the option to get fresh atmosphere or sunlight without having to vacate our property. It is unlikely not to have a decent garden in a common residence no matter what size it is and better gardens are classified by how green and lively the plants are and how its surroundings can be enjoyed.

In order for a standard garden to develop into a better garden, several aspects are considered. These aspects usually include the look of the lawn, the variety and arrangement of plants, accommodation for people, and how welcoming it is.

Lawns are usually graded of how green and how trimmed the grasses are. Other people and passers-by are the ones to make a solid opinion. Lawns that are well taken care of typically has green and fresh looking grass along with several other plants that counts to the garden's overall aesthetic merit. Maintaining a better garden lawn only requires sufficient sunlight and regular watering of lawn grass and plants.

In order for a garden to be welcoming, it should come with an area where people can spend their moment relaxing or having fun. The simplest of these are identified as patios. A patio is simply a paved spot within a garden or lawn whether it’s constructed at a corner, side, or middle.

Patios serve as an island or a shore where individuals could walk about or sit around without having to walk on the grassy lawn itself. Each form of patio is differentiated based on its construction. Porch, terraces, gazebos and verandas are just a few types of patios that beautify people’s gardens.

If you do not have the adequate resources to construct your own patio, a simple pouring of concrete might do. If you want to add more elegance and grace, you can make a patio with bricks, fine cut marble, or anything fancy. Adding a roof over it will make it fitting for all seasons. Patios that generally come with a roof such as gazebos and porches needs more effort than that of an open patio.

Porches are generally joined to the house itself but there are cases where it can be positioned at the other end of the house. To build a porch calls for architectural planning since there is a chance where damages to the house could occur if not built right. As soon as a porch is fully constructed, a few niceties can be added such as railings, fences, and paneling.

Gazebos, with their design and sophistication, are still considered a showcase to modern gardens and greatly add to appeal for outdoor ceremonies. Gazebos are notably popular for outdoor weddings and orchestra.

A better garden will also not be complete with no lawn furniture. Outdoor furniture should be able to adapt to any season and durable. Among the usual kinds of garden furniture to choose from are wood, metal and plastic furniture.

A beautifully crafted metal furniture have a nice blend to a garden’s look and a large amount of them are specially made to keep out rust and be as durable as possible. Some of the popular outdoor furniture are wrought iron, stainless steel and aluminum. All of which are specially treated to for durability.

Perhaps the cheapest of all types of furniture are made of plastic. They are also the easiest to store and carry because of their weigh far less and they do not rust.

Garden furniture made of wood are made from selected varieties of wood that is adaptable to the elements. Pine and oak are appropriate and they are usually coated with special varnishes that makes them applicable for the outdoors.

Laura Davis asked:

These instructions once perfected will give you perfect roses commonly used on wedding cakes; this method is tricky and it is recommended you practise making the roses before the day of preparation.

Break off a small piece of the fondant and roll it until you roughly have a 1” diameter ball. Shape the ball into a cone by pinching one side of it; ideally you want the cone to be 1.5” tall.

To make a petal roll a ball of fondant roughly a quarter of the size of the previous, do not worry too much about size, if in a later stage you are finding that the sizes of the petals are too small then start again.

Once you have your ball we want to flatten it to form a petal; use your thumb and press down on the ball. You want to create a circle that is 2” in diameter, it is important that the petal is about ¼” thick on the bottom and thin on the top.

*For a more realistic look ensure that the petal tips are paper thin.

Having created the first petal, apply to the base of the cone, carefully wrapping it around finishing with a furl at the top to create a bud.

It is best to start by applying the thick side of the petal to the base of the cone then carefully wrap the thin ‘petal’ around- slightly bending it over itself to create a bloom effect.

Do the same with the three remaining petals; applying them from the bottom bud and delicately shaping the thin top to replicate a rose’s petal as it unfurls from the bud.

Make five more petals, this time slightly larger than the originals but ensure you still keep the tips as thin as possible. Apply these final petals lower down on the base than the previous petals, spread the petals evenly round the base layering them up and curling the edges back a slight bit more to create more bloom.

Continue layering the petals on until you are satisfied with the fullness of the rose.

Prepare For A Lawn Winter Ahead:

Fall Yard Care Projects

The summer holidays are behind us, and the days are getting cooler – now is the perfect time to “think spring” when it comes to caring for your yard. The few extra hours you invest in your yard over the next month or two will pay off next spring and summer in the form of less work and a faster, better-looking lawn.

Here are some yard care projects you can tackle now

What to do with all the leaves you’ve raked

Small piles of leaves can be ground up and run over them with a lawn mower. These small pieces of leaves can provide excellent nutrients to your lawn! Do this several times to create a fine mulch for your lawn. Large amounts of leaves will smother your lawn and hinder healthy growth. Remember to either brown bag them, or recycle them in your own compost pile!

It’s the very best time to seed your lawn

If you are establishing a new lawn or just filling in bare patches, fall is the best time to take on this task to ensure success with your cool season grass. The warm soil combined with cool nights is perfect for grass seed germination. Start with high quality seed that matches what is already growing in your lawn – the local garden center will have mixes appropriate for the colder climate. Disperse the seed with a hand-held seeder or, for larger areas, with your spreader. Be sure you have good soil-to-seed contact by tamping, rolling or lightly pressing the seeds down with the back of a rake. Add a light layer of paper mulch or straw (not hay – it will contain weed seeds!) on top of the area to help conserve moisture. Sprinkle with water immediately and don’t let the soil dry out until the young grass has sprouted. For a complete “how to” on seeding or laying sod, visit our tutorials.

Get rid of those weeds once and for all

If you finally want to get rid of those yellow flowers that pop up every spring, fall is the best time to do it. Dandelions are “broadleaf” weeds that germinate in the fall and drive you crazy in spring. The ideal time to control this type of broadleaf weed ranges from early October in the northern U.S. to late October in the South. You want to apply a broadleaf herbicide as the weeds germinate. A liquid herbicide that you spray on will help ensure contact with the new, small weeds as they germinate. Dandelions are a main target, but this will also control all winter annual weeds that flower in the spring.

Feed your lawn

If you live in the northern half of the United States, you have what is classified as “cool season” grass, and now is the best time to fertilize. In fact, if you were to only fertilize once a year, this is would be the time to do it. The warm soil temperature combined with cooler days, longer nights and rainfall make this the perfect time for lawn growth and recovery. In fall, your lawn spreads horizontally, filling in those thin spots, rather than just growing tall. Feed your lawn with a good nitrogen and potassium combination fertilizer.
Draw up your plan for spring

You’ve enjoyed your yard all summer and you know what you like the best and the least. Why not plan your changes now and even start implementing them? Maybe it is time to finally create a stone or wood chip pathway to the kids’ play area where foot traffic has worn out the lawn. Do you need to separate those overgrown perennials? This is the time to remove and replant bulbs and divide clumps of plants and share them with your neighbors. Also, mark your flower beds using permanent marker on paint stir sticks or draw up a “map” of your flowerbeds so you will know what you have next spring and more easily be able to separate the good plants from the weeds. Fall is also a good time to add new trees to your landscape.
